The history of Shaolin Kungfu spans more than 1500 years, during which it has branched to numerous different kungfu-styles such as Tai Chi Chuan-, Hung Gar-, Praying Mantis-, Wing Chun- and Choy Lee Fut -kungfu, and many more. Throughout the centuries, Shaolin Kungfu has been practised by both monks as well as lay disciples.

Many consider Shaolin Kungfu to be the best martial art in the world. This is not only because of its usefulness in any real life combat situations, but also due to its practice which holistically develops all the qualities and abilities of a person. The resulting benefits of training go way beyond fighting prowess to health, personal development and mental as well as spiritual cultivation, which make Shaolin Kungfu a unique martial art of the highest level.

The combat techniques of Shaolin Kungfu are typically straightforward and effective, which are also the characteristics of Zen. However, it is marked by compassion and wisdom: A Shaolin Kungfu exponent nurtures life, avoids violence and seeks peaceful solutions that benefit everybody.

At its basic level, Shaolin Kungfu offers radiant health, vitality and good skills for self-defense. At the middle level, the training enables to be efficent and successful in all areas of life. At the highest level, Shaolin Kungfu is a very effective method for spiritual cultivation, paving the way towards the highest spiritual fulfillment.

All of the above benefits are present even at basic training - the emphasis and overall result depends on the practitioner and the quality of practice. It bears mentioning that Shaolin Kungfu training also helps to enrich the lives of others: Through correct practice, the student becomes compassionate, courageous and learns to uphold high moral standards.

The ideals for Shaolin Kungfu training are the Scholar Warrior and the Warrion Monk.

How to practice Shaolin Kungfu?

shaolin-kungfu-sparring-5Shaolin Kungfu is not for everybody. Its training - although always rewarding - is very demanding, and it calls for strong dedication and determination to reach set objectives.

Shaolin Kungfu is equally suitable for men and women, and training can start basically at any age. However, the basic requirements are having reasonably good health for vigorous daily exercise, and absolutely agreeing to follow the Ten Shaolin Laws as an integral part of the training.

The kungfu courses in Shaolin Wahnam Finland are designed for adults. In our school, taking up Shaolin Kungfu as a light hobby is very much discouraged: Apply for our courses only if you are determined to put in serious effort into daily practice.
